KUALA LUMPUR: Only three out of the 528 Tamil schools nationwide are classified as dilapidated, says the Education Ministry.
"Based on data from September, three government-funded Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) are classified under scale 7, which is the dilapidated building category," the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply dated Dec 3.
It said several measures have been implemented to upgrade SJK(T) infrastructure nationwide.
"Among them is the construction of a replacement building for SJK(T) Dengkil, Selangor, approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
"Meanwhile, the application to rebuild a dilapidated building and add a new block for SJK(T) Gopeng, Perak, was approved under the 13th Malaysia Plan," it added.
Perak has the highest number of SJK(T) at 134, followed by Selangor (99), Johor (71), Neeri Sembilan (61), Kedah (60), Pahang (37), Penang (28), Melaka (21), Kuala Lumpur (15), Kelantan and Perlis (one each).
Datuk Seri M. Saravanan (BN-Tapah) had asked for the current number of Tamil schools in the country, including those in dilapidated condition, as well as the ministry’s plans to upgrade these schools.
