I’ll prove my innocence in court, says Shamsul Iskandar

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin says he will prove his innocence through the court process after claiming trial to four counts of corruption.

“I will prove my innocence through the proper legal process,” said the Prime Minister's former senior political secretary in a press conference outside the Kuala Lumpur court complex on Thursday (Dec 4).

Shamsul Iskandar said he will abide by the court’s orders as he looks to clear his name following allegations that he had received bribes linked to Sabah mineral exploration mining licensing last month.

“Since the beginning, I have taken a proactive and cooperative approach with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) especially, to complete the investigation and clear my name.

Shamsul Iskandar also thanked his team of lawyers for helping him in the case and his friends and family for supporting him during this period.

His lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad said that his client will continue to fully cooperate in the investigation.

“This was displayed by my client's immediate action to lodge a police report after news of the allegations came to light.

“My client will defend his case and prove that he is not guilty of the accusations and allegations that have been directed at him,” Amer said.

Shamsul Iskandar’s other lawyer, Yusmadi Yusoff, also called on the public to avoid speculating on the case as investigations have just begun.

“We have seen many comments and posts online that have been quite excessive, with some going beyond what is appropriate.

“I would like to remind the public that there is no need for speculation now as investigations into the case have just begun,” he said.
