Suspected migrant smuggler nabbed in Jeli

KOTA BARU: Quick action by a patrol team from the Jeli district police headquarters foiled an attempt to smuggle in five undocumented Myanmar migrants in the Jeli Puspen area on Sunday (Nov 30).

In the 1.30pm incident, the driver of a blue car sped off when police told him to stop.

The car skidded and crashed, and the driver was arrested, Jeli OCPD Supt Kamarulzaman Harun said in a statement on Monday (Dec 1).

He added that the team found that the car's five passengers, all Myanmar nationals, did not have valid travel documents.

Police believe they were being taken to work in Gerik and would be paid RM200 each.

He added that checks found that the driver had four previous drug-related offences on his criminal record.

The suspect and also tested positive for methamphetamine, he said.

"The case is being investigated under Sections 55E and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.
