KUCHING: Sarawak is aiming for a 35% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 under its net zero strategy and carbon plan, the state legislative assembly was told.
State Deputy International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the target would be achieved through core measures such as electrification and material efficiency.
"It will be supported by investments in renewable energy, hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies, alongside incentives to encourage private sector participation," he said when delivering the ministry's winding-up speech on Monday (Dec 1).
In line with this, Mussen said Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) was accelerating the development of floating solar projects in its hydropower dam reservoirs with cooperation from China and Middle East investors.
He said independent power producers had also proposed developing ground-mounted solar projects, with four power purchase agreements already signed with SEB.
"SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd is leading major international hydrogen initiatives, green mobility and advanced manufacturing.
"Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) is also advancing Sarawak's low-carbon leadership by pioneering CCUS development," he said.
Mussen added that Petros and its anchor partners were formulating the Kuching Low Carbon Hub (KLCH) master plan, guided by an industry-led and demand-driven approach.
He said this would ensure alignment with market needs while integrating energy development with broader urban planning to support diversification, sustainability and long-term industrial resilience.
"Through this coordinated effort, KLCH is poised to become a dynamic, well-connected hub that attracts new investments and reinforces Sarawak's overall development trajectory," he said.
