KUANTAN: A former Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station chief pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Friday (Oct 30) to a charge of receiving a RM2,000 bribe in May last year.
The accused, Wan Muhammad Faiz Wan Asri, 31, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Sazlina Safie.
According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have received the cash without consideration from a man who had dealings connected to his official duties.
He is accused of committing the offence at the compound of the Puncak Arabella Multipurpose Hall in Cameron Highlands at about 9.45pm on May 28, 2025.
The charge is framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years' jail or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Rais Adha Ramli sought bail of RM12,000 with one surety, with the accused required to report to the nearest MACC office monthly and barred from interfering with prosecution witnesses.
Lawyer Ahmad Nur Faid Afiq Aziz appealed for a lower bail, saying his client is the sole breadwinner, supporting his wife, a child and both parents on about RM3,000 a month, and has had to dip into savings to pay the bail.
Sazlina allowed bail at RM5,000 on condition that the accused surrenders his passport to the court, reports to the MACC office monthly until the case is resolved, and does not disturb witnesses.
The court fixed Dec 11 for mention. – Bernama
