Govt steps up action against e-commerce scams, consumer complaints

PETALING JAYA: The government will step up action against scams and other consumer problems involving e-commerce platforms, including complaints over high commission fees and goods that do not match what was ordered.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had raised concerns over problems faced by both consumers and online sellers.

These included high commission fees imposed by e-commerce platforms as well as cases where consumers received products that differed from what they had ordered.

Fahmi said Anwar had directed the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Communications Ministry, particularly the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to take immediate action, especially against fraud and scams involving e-commerce platforms.

He said MCMC had held an engagement session with major e-commerce platform operators several weeks ago to discuss the issues.

An engagement session involving enforcement agencies would also be held in the coming weeks to coordinate an integrated approach to addressing problems faced by consumers on online marketplaces, he added.

Fahmi said the Prime Minister wanted the matter to be given priority and addressed promptly.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has agreed to review existing guidelines on the management of abandoned vehicles following complaints that the current process takes too long.

Fahmi said the Transport Ministry and Housing and Local Government Ministry would work to improve coordination between agencies, clarify their responsibilities and streamline the management and disposal of abandoned vehicles.

Separately, Fahmi announced that the government would continue supporting the media industry through the RM30mil Media Innovation Fund 2.0.

The initiative follows the original Media Innovation Fund announced by Anwar during the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebrations.

Under the initial RM30mil allocation, 72 media companies received funding for transformation initiatives including training, strengthening operations and exploring new approaches to content production and delivery.

Fahmi said Media Innovation Fund 2.0 reflected the government's continued commitment to supporting innovation, digitalisation, talent development and the adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in the media industry.

The new fund will retain the four existing funding categories while introducing an additional category, bringing the total to five.

Applications for the RM30mil fund are now open.
