KUALA KRAI: A father who rushed to save his family from their flooded house faced another challenge after his car caught fire at a temporary relief centre.
For Mohd Khairi Mat Zain, 30, the incident added to the pain at a time when his family had just found a place to rest after the flood disaster early Wednesday.
The father of two said the incident happened around noon when he returned home to clean his flooded house.
“When the water started to recede the next day, I went home to clean. Suddenly my mother, called and told me that smoke was coming out of the engine of my car,” he told Bernama.
Several flood victims also helped put out the fire using fire extinguishers found in the school compound.
“This car is the only vehicle I have used for almost seven years for work and family matters. So far I do not know the exact cause of the fire ... maybe a short circuit or other reasons.
“I am very grateful to the victims at the relief centre who all helped put out the fire before it spread,” he said.
He said the cost of repairing the car is expected to be high, and he is now considering buying a new vehicle.
“I am at peace with what had happened. When the flood subsides, I will take care of the house and car matters one by one,” he said.
