SEPANG: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a missing policeman, who is believed to have been swept away by strong currents in Kampung Giching, here on Friday, continues with a force of about 60 personnel from various agencies.

Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said the operation involved the Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defence Force, the police as well as villagers.

He said the SAR operation resumed at 7.30am yesterday.

“We started the SAR at about 11pm on Friday and halted at 4.30am, before it was resumed at 7.30am on Saturday.

“We cannot confirm whether the victim had drowned or otherwise because there are no clues, except for personal belongings in the vehicle that were confirmed to belong to the 23-year-old,” ACP Norhizam told reporters at the scene.

“The personal belongings included a pouch containing a police identification card, shoes and a jacket.”

According to witnesses, the victim was seen clinging to a signboard before he was swept away.

Based on initial information, the victim, who is with the Nilai police station, was on his way to work after visiting family in the area.

At 6pm, the SAR operation covering a 5km search radius was halted and will resume today.

It was previously reported that the policeman was feared to have drowned after the car he was driving became trapped in rising floodwaters near Klinik Desa Giching.
