Plans to convert old Siniawan police station into police museum being studied, Sarawak assembly told

State Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan speaking in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Friday (Nov 28).

KUCHING: A proposal to develop the old police station in Siniawan near here into a police museum is being studied, says state Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan.

He acknowledged the historic value of the police station, which was built nearly 100 years ago before the formation of Malaysia.

"The ministry, together with the relevant agencies, will look into the best way to preserve the building and explore its potential as a tourist attraction.

"At present, the proposal to turn it into the Sarawak Police Museum is still being discussed and evaluated," he told Datuk Miro Simuh (GPS-Serembu) during question time at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Friday (Nov 28).

In May 2023, it was reported that Siniawan's old police station building, one of the oldest in Sarawak, would be developed into a police museum.

Snowdan also said the state Museum Department was committed to identifying historic buildings in Sarawak to be gazetted under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance.

Based on the Ordinance, he said, a building can be considered for gazetting if it was built before 1940 and has significant historical value.

"Any proposal to gazette the Siniawan old police station under the Ordinance requires a comprehensive assessment involving all stakeholders," he added.
