Shamsul Iskandar’s resignation shows govt’s commitment to integrity, says Anwar

KOTA KINABALU: The resignation of Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Akin as senior political secretary demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding integrity, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar highlighted that Shamsul Iskandar’s decision to step down was both immediate and unprecedented.

"There was an immediate resignation and he requested the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct an investigation.

"Has that happened before? In the past, if a Prime Minister was investigated, relatives fled abroad. What sort of integrity is that?" Anwar said during a youth programme in Inanam on Thursday (Nov 27).

Shamsul Iskandar recently resigned from his post as Anwar’s senior political secretary.

The MACC has since announced it will investigate allegations implicating both Shamsul Iskandar and controversial businessman Albert Tei.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said both Tei and Shamsul Iskandar will be summoned to provide statements soon.

This follows Tei’s claim that he spent RM629,000 on Shamsul to help recover funds allegedly channelled to Sabah politicians, as well as the release of WhatsApp screenshots from December 2023 purportedly showing requests for money from Shamsul while he was travelling overseas.

Tei is also embroiled in controversy after allegations that he bribed several Sabah leaders to obtain mineral prospecting licences.
