KANGAR: Most foreigners in Perlis were detected working in the construction and plantation sectors, including poultry farms, said Perlis Immigration director Mohammad A'sim Md Ali.
He said his department detected the situation through Ops Sasar which was carried out in 13 locations in the state on Aug 10 and yesterday (Aug 11).
Mohammad A'sim said the operation involved the participation of 28 Immigration officers who inspected 116 individuals consisting of 108 foreigners and eight Malaysians.
"Of the 108 foreigners inspected, 50 were Bangladeshis, 23 Indonesians, 22 Myanmar, seven Thais and six Indians, and from this total, 28 foreigners were detained for committing various immigration offences," he said at a press conference in conjunction with the operation which was carried out simultaneously nationwide.
Mohammad A'sim said the detained foreigners consisted of 22 men, four women and two girls aged between three and 45 years old, of which 16 were Bangladeshis and 12 were Myanmar nationals.
"Among the offences identified were not having a valid travel document or pass under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, offences of protecting foreigners under Section 56(1)(d) of the same act, as well as offences under Regulation 39(b), Immigration Regulations 1963," he said.
He said all the detainees were taken to the Kangar Immigration Detention Depot for documentation, investigation and further action while a Form 29, which is a summons to a witness, was also issued to a Malaysian to assist in the investigation.
Meanwhile, Mohammad A'sim said his party would continue to act if there was information and complaints and conduct regular inspections to ensure the situation in Perlis was under control from the entry of illegal immigrants. - Bernama
