Melaka polls: PH pledges early lease extensions, youth contracts

MELAKA: Landowners in Melaka will be able to apply for lease extensions well before their titles hit their final 10 years under a key election pledge unveiled by Pakatan Harapan.

Melaka Pakatan chairman Adly Zahari said the proposal, part of the coalition’s "Aspirasi Melaka Rumah Kita" manifesto, aims to give property owners and their families greater long-term security.

“We propose using idle land for economic activities and modern farming and to strengthen food security,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday (Nov 4).

The coalition's manifesto sets out three main priorities and 12 core aspirations. Among these is a proposal to reserve 30% of local council works contracts specifically for young entrepreneurs to help them gain vital business experience.

Pakatan also plans to streamline financing for small business owners, provide targeted grants for women traders, and expand government childcare centres to better support working mothers.

In a separate statement, Pakatan Harapan noted that its 24 state election candidates have identified urgent, constituency-specific challenges to tackle.

Key local priorities range from flood mitigation, coastal erosion, and water disruptions to overcrowded classrooms, housing upgrades, waste management, and support for Felda settlers.

Candidates plan to meet directly with relevant government agencies to fast-track solutions and keep residents updated.

To reach voters, the coalition is running a low-key, ground-level campaign focused on house visits, small-group talks, and its "Kopilih Harapan" voter engagement program.
