KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 17 cases of improper display or misuse of the Jalur Gemilang were recorded nationwide in 2025, says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
As of October, Kuala Lumpur recorded two cases, Penang five, Johor four, Negri Sembilan one, Selangor four and Perak one.
Of these, five cases have been resolved while 12 remain under investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police, said the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories).
Dr Zaliha responded in a written reply to Chiew Choon Man (PH–Miri).
He asked about actions taken against incorrect display of the national flag and whether similar measures apply to public agencies.
To this, Dr Zaliha said the government continues to raise awareness on proper flag usage among individuals, agencies, statutory bodies, NGOs and private organisations.
She said enforcement falls under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963.
The Act prohibits unauthorised use of official symbols for commercial, professional or other purposes.
She said violations under Section 3 include using the flag in business, patents, trademarks or designs without permission.
Offenders face fines up to RM20,000, imprisonment for up to three years or both under Section 5.
“The government is committed to ensuring that the Jalur Gemilang is displayed correctly and respectfully at all times,” she said.
