KOTA KINABALU: All forms of digital violence against women and children must be eliminated, say Sabah Pakatan Harapan's women candidates.
In a joint statement, Datuk Jannie Lasimbang (Kapayan), Noorita Sual (Kemabong), Vivian Wong (Elopura) and Tan Szu Ching (Tanjong Papat) said this can be achieved through enhancing digital literacy, advocacy and transparency.
"As we stand in solidarity for this cause, we are calling for everyone to unite and work towards achieving a common goal of ending all forms of digital violence against women and children," they said on Tuesday (Nov 25).
"This statement comes in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which is observed on Nov 25 this year, (with) a 16-day activism campaign until Dec 10, which is Human Rights Day."
The candidates urged the government to amend or enforce related laws to fight digital violence, protect personal information, and strengthen accountability in the technology sector.
They said women and children often fall prey to domestic violence and gender-based crimes, more so in war-torn countries or those experiencing unrest.
With advancements in technology, digital abuse – including personal, cruel and appalling attacks – is also on the rise, they noted.
“Therefore, the focus is more on addressing these aspects this year," they said.
They cited as examples cyberbullying, unconsented sharing of personal and intimate images or videos, as well as trolling and sexual harassment.
Fake images and information targeting women and children, grooming, hate speech, doxxing and stalking are also on the rise, they added, further illustrating the need for greater effort to stop such acts.
"Pakatan Harapan women are committed to providing support and a safe space for children and victims of gender-based violence," the candidates said.
