Clerk loses nearly RM95,000 in part-time job scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A female clerk in Terengganu lost RM94,569 after being deceived by a syndicate offering fake part-time jobs on social media.

Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said that on Nov 13, the 44-year-old victim received a message via WhatsApp from an unknown individual offering a part-time job to earn extra income.

He said the victim was then added to a Telegram group to receive an explanation about the job and was promised a 20% commission based on the capital she put up for each task.

"The victim, who is from Kampung Gelugor Raja here, was instructed to carry out tasks involving the purchase of goods purportedly to boost the company's 'rating'.

"Excited by the relatively high commission, the victim made payments amounting to RM94,569 for the purchase of goods into seven different bank accounts using her savings," he said in a statement on Monday (Nov 24).

Azli said the victim, who works in a private company, realised she had been cheated when she failed to recover her capital and the promised commission.

The suspect even instructed the victim to make an additional payment of RM50,000 to retrieve the money she had invested.

"The victim lodged a police report at about 4.49pm on Sunday and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said. - Bernama
