Anifah Aman to contest Bongawan in Sabah state polls

KOTA KINABALU: Former Foreign Minister Tan Sri Anifah Aman is set to contest the Bongawan state seat under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) ticket in the Nov 29 state election.

Anifah, who is Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president, confirmed when contacted that he will be contesting the seat currently held by opposition Warisan’s Dr Daud Yusof.

Anifah, who was Kimanis MP until 2018, unsuccessfully tried to unseat Dr Daud in the 2020 snap election, when he contested under his party’s ticket for the seat in Sabah’s south-western Beaufort area.

Anifah is expected to challenge Daud and Sabah Barisan Nasional’s Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin, who is also the Kimanis MP, for the seat, where other parties including Perikatan are eyeing to field candidates.

In the last state election, Dr Daud won with a majority of 1,802 votes when he received 5,400 votes against Barisan’s candidate Ag Lahap Ag Bakar (3,459 votes) and Anifah (3,596 votes) in a four-cornered fight.

PCS is one of six parties under GRS, headed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, that will contest against Barisan in this election.
