KUALA LUMPUR: Sudan remains open to initiatives to end the war but has yet to see concrete progress under the United States led Quad, says Hassan Abdel Salam Omer.
The Sudanese ambassador to Malaysia was responding to reports of a truce agreed in principle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
He said the reported truce was possibly a three-month arrangement mediated by Washington.
“We did not reach any agreement on this till now,” he said on Wednesday (Nov 5).
“As far as I know, I have not received anything confirming that,” added Hassan.
He referred to remarks attributed to US senior adviser for Arab and African affairs Massad Boulos.
Boulos reportedly said both the SAF and RSF had agreed in principle to the truce.
Hassan said Khartoum remains open to any facilitation that can end the war and let people return home.
However, he said there is deep scepticism over the RSF’s reliability due to previous ceasefire breaches.
“Our experience shows that you cannot trust the RSF,” he said.
He referred to truces under the Jeddah Declaration that were repeatedly violated by the paramilitary group.
He said Sudan supports peace initiatives that uphold the aspirations of the Sudanese people, adding that these include national sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic transformation.
He said they also include the principle of one unified army under a single command.
