Condemnation appreciated but more than words needed, says Sudan envoy

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent condemnation by Muslim nations against the Rapid Support Forces is appreciated, but Sudan needs more than words, says its ambassador to Malaysia Hassan Abdel Salam Omer.

He urged the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and individual Muslim countries to move beyond statements of solidarity and take concrete action.

He said action is needed to stop the violence before “this horror spreads elsewhere.”

“I would like to thank and appreciate the statement issued by the OIC for condemning the atrocities committed by the RSF,” he said.

“It shows the OIC’s solidarity with Sudan through its condemnation of the crimes in Al Fasher and across Sudan,” added Hassan Abdel.

“But yet we are looking for more than condemnation,” he said.

“The Ummah’s solidarity is expected, but we need more involvement,” he said.

He said this should come from the OIC as an organisation and from individual Muslim countries in restoring peace in Sudan.

He spoke at a press conference at the Embassy of Sudan on Wednesday (Nov 5) and

warned that inaction could lead to further atrocities.

“Peace cannot be achieved with a militia of warlords serving as proxies for foreign powers,” he said.

“The Government of Sudan will not negotiate with them. The only acceptable path forward is to disarm and dismantle this militia,” he said.

Hassan Abdel said the crisis in Sudan is not a civil war but a conspiracy by known regional actors.

He said the target is Sudan’s unity and resources and his remarks come as Arab nations and regional organisations issued strong condemnations of “grave humanitarian violations” during the RSF’s assault on Al Fasher.

They urged restraint and a humanitarian truce.

He cited overwhelming evidence of systematic war crimes and genocidal intent and

called on the international community to designate the RSF as a terrorist organisation.

He also urged an investigation into the genocide in El Fasher and a halt to foreign interference.

Hassan Abdel called for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024) and urged targeted sanctions on governments and entities providing weapons, mercenaries or political cover to the RSF.

He called for international support for Sudan’s Transitional Government and its roadmap which includes a permanent ceasefire, disarmament of militias and unification of the national army under one command.
