Police probing case of upside-down flag on MPV in Johor

PONTIAN: The owner of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) for allegedly displaying a miniature Jalur Gemilang flag upside down has given full cooperation during the initial investigation.

The investigation into the 44-year-old male labourer was carried out after a video went viral on social media showing an upside-down flag on the roof of a MPV parked in front of a furniture shop at Jalan Pekan Nanas.

“The video, which went viral on Sunday (Oct 26), has caused various reactions among the community,’’ said Pontian OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib in a statement on Sunday (Oct 26).

“Immediate action has been taken to correct the position of the flag,’’ he added.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

“We would like to remind the public not to speculate or spread provocative comments or statements on the issue through any social media platforms until the investigation is completed,’’ said Supt Mohammad Shofee.

He said that those with additional information on the case can contact the Pontian Police District Headquarters at 07-6871222.
