Melaka govt to host special education convention in December

ALOR GAJAH: The state government will hold a special education convention in December to identify practical solutions to address student character development issues, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

He said the convention will feature focused discussions in workshop sessions by clusters involving all Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) as well as various agencies and departments across the state.

"For the first time, a convention dedicated to addressing issues of student discipline, misconduct, and broader educational plans will be held, with all solutions and practical recommendations emerging from the discussions to be presented to the Education Ministry.

"I am confident that with the collective commitment of all parties, we can drive a wave of educational transformation, particularly in shaping students' character and values, across all levels of society to nurture a generation of integrity and strong moral character," he told reporters after officiating the Sentuhan Kasih Ketua Menteri Melaka Bijak SPM 2025 programme at Dewan Taming Sari, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Alor Gajah Campus in Lendu earlier on Friday (Oct 24).

Ab Rauf said several incidents involving students in Melaka, including cases of bullying and serious offences, should serve as a wake-up call for all parties, underscoring the need for firm and decisive action.

He said the state government welcomed the police to make surprise school visits as part of efforts to prevent students from engaging in criminal behaviour.

"Thank God, Melaka police have begun conducting surprise visits to schools to ensure a safe and well-regulated learning environment. Firm action is essential, as such offences not only endanger students' futures but also undermine the integrity of the entire education ecosystem.

"Therefore, I urge all levels of school administration, educators, agencies and parents to place greater emphasis on nurturing students' character, discipline and compassion, while at the same time strengthening collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure a safe, conducive and values-driven learning environment," he said. - Bernama
