Landslides hit Balik Pulau as monsoon rains lash Penang

BALIK PULAU: Jalan Tun Sardon here has been closed for 48 hours after several landslides struck the hilly stretch following continuous heavy rain.

Penang infrastructure and transport committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said 17 collapses were detected along the P14 state road, with some sections badly damaged.

He said the worst incident occurred at KM5.10, where soil movement was still active when officials arrived on Wednesday (Oct 22) evening.

The Public Works Department (JKR) and police immediately cordoned off the area and ordered a full closure from 6pm on Thursday (Oct 23) to 6pm on Saturday (Oct 25).

"Heavy rain and strong winds were the main causes, and cleanup works are now underway to reopen the route safely," Zairil told the press at the site on Friday (Oct 24).

He added that minor landslides and fallen trees were also reported in other parts of the island, including Tanjung Bungah, Paya Terubong and Teluk Bahang.

Motorists are advised to stay alert and report incidents via the Penang Island City Council hotline (016-200 4082) or through the Pearl App.
