KUALA LUMPUR: The Police are focusing on any possible threats of extremism and terrorism that may try to take advantage of the 47th Asean Summit to be held from Oct 26 to 28.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said that cyber security threats and the potential of uncontrolled protests, as well as traffic management around the main conference location, were also identified as among the main challenges during the conference.

"To face the challenges, proactive measures have been taken, including early intelligence, continuous monitoring and the deployment of special action teams at strategic locations.
"A total of 10,170 police officers and personnel have been mobilised to carry out security assignments throughout the prestigious event," he told Bernama when contacted here on Tuesday (Oct 21) about the police's preparedness for the conference attended by many world leaders.
Mohd Khalid said the assignment also involved the use of various land and air assets, including surveillance drones, high-tech closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) and integrated tactical communication systems.

At the same time, he said the police were also using a data analytics approach to improve operational efficiency on the ground.
He said that apart from the main conference location and the official hotels of delegations, security control throughout the summit also covers all the country's main entry points, including airports, ports and land borders.
"Strategic areas around the Klang Valley, such as Putrajaya, are also under close monitoring and all police contingents have been instructed to step up the level of preparedness," he said.
The 47th Asean Summit, themed "Inclusivity and Sustainability", was scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 26 to 28 with the participation of the top leaders of the 10 Asean member states as well as key dialogue partners including the United States, China, Japan and India. – Bernama.
