Police warn against rallies disrupting Asean Summit routes and proceedings

KUALA LUMPUR: Stern action will be taken against demonstrations or rallies that disrupt routes or proceedings during the 47th Asean Summit, says Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief said police have received intelligence on planned demonstrations during the event.

“We have engaged the organisers of the rallies,” he said on Tuesday (Oct 21).

“We will take stern action against any gatherings that disrupt traffic, interrupt the Asean Summit or jeopardise public order,” added Comm Fadil.

Several roads in the city centre will be closed and diverted in stages from October 26 to 28.

JSPT director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri announced this earlier.

“We advise the public to avoid affected routes or use public transport. Plan your journeys so you are not stuck in congestion,” he added.

Comm Fadil said police need public cooperation on this matter.

“Follow the instructions of traffic police personnel and officers,” he said.

He praised the Education Ministry for allowing students from 102 schools to study from home during the period.

“All eyes are on the country as host for the summit,” he said.

“We hope everyone can play their part in making the event a success,” he added.

Comm Fadil said more than 10,000 police personnel and officers will be deployed to ensure safety and security.
