GRS coalition aims for stronger political representation, says UMS Assoc Prof

KOTA KINABALU: Local parties in Sabah, including Upko, align with the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition to strengthen political representation and negotiation power with the federal government.

According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Senior Fellow and advisor of the Borneo History Society, Assoc Prof Dr Bilcher Bala of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, stated that GRS is evolving into a platform for consolidating local political strength. He noted that without unity, Sabah's negotiating ability on state rights and development diminishes.

Bala emphasised that a coalition of local parties could enhance communication with Putrajaya regarding the need for development funding. He indicated that a stable government is essential for effective administration and financial management.

“If all local parties in Sabah have a common intention, which is to fight for state rights, it is only right for them to work together instead of fighting each other,” Prof Bilcher said.
