Sabah polls: Grant unrecorded leave to those returning home to vote, says MP

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah lawmaker wants the Federal Government to grant a day's unrecorded leave to Sabahans returning to vote this November.

Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis also urged the Transport Minister to ensure that airfares from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah are reduced or capped at a reasonable price for this purpose.

This comes after the Election Commission’s (EC) announcement on Thursday (Oct 16) that Sabahans outside the state within the country must return home to vote.

The 17th Sabah State Election will be on Nov 29, a Saturday.

The EC said the suggestion to extend postal voting to Sabahans living outside the state has not been decided upon yet, and urged them to come home to vote.

Munirah said implementing the unrecorded leave and capping airfares could help Sabahans fulfil their duty as citizens without burdening them too much.

"I hope these suggestions receive serious consideration so that Sabahans' rights will not be denied," she added.

Nomination Day falls on Nov 15, with early voting on Nov 25.
