Education Ministry to review guidelines on smartphone use, supports social media age limit

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry will review the proposed guidelines on banning smartphone use in schools.

In a statement Friday (Oct 17), the ministry said the guidelines are expected to be issued soon.

“The ministry is reviewing the appropriate guidelines following the proposal to enhance safety in schools, including the smartphone ban for students under 16.

“The ministry welcomes the Cabinet’s decision, which outlines immediate steps to address safety concerns in educational institutions, including efforts to strengthen police monitoring in all schools,” it said.

The ministry also added that it supports the government’s intention to set the minimum age for social media use at 16, aimed at protecting children and teenagers from cyber threats.

“The mechanism for its implementation will be reviewed by the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“All educational institutions under the ministry’s purview are also urged to strengthen the role of Parent-Teacher Associations and local communities to help enhance safety within school environments,” the statement read.

The ministry also said the cross-ministerial and agency collaboration reflects the Madani government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening safety measures in all educational institutions under the Education Ministry.
