PETALING JAYA: The motive behind the brutal stabbing of a 16-year-old female student at SMK Bandar Utama 4, Petaling Jaya, remains the central focus of police investigation.
Reports circulating among other students suggested that the 14-year-old male suspect became enraged after his confession of love was rejected a day prior to the incident.
However, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shamsudin Mamat said the police are exploring various angles in the investigation and cautioned against early conclusions.
“It is still too early in the investigation. We are still investigating the case, including the actual motive for the attack. We will release further information once we obtain solid information,” he said.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that a 14-year-old male student has been detained after the fatal stabbing of a schoolmate.
He said the incident occurred at about 9am yesterday.
“The suspect had allegedly stabbed the female student outside a class.
“She died at the scene,” he told reporters after launching the police’s anti-bullying campaign yesterday.
He said police personnel were deployed to the scene to investigate the matter further.
Meanwhile at the scene, ACP Shamsudin said two sharp weapons, believed to have been used in the brutal stabbing, were seized.
“Upon receiving a distress call, police personnel arrived at the scene at about 9.40am and confirmed that a murder had taken place.
“The victim was found dead in the school toilet,” he said.
“At this stage, we have found no indication that the case involved bullying.
“Initial investigation revealed that teachers who heard the victim’s screams had tried to intervene, but the girl was already dead when they arrived,” he said.
ACP Shamsudin said police personnel recorded statements from students and teachers there.
“This process will also include friends and classmates of the victim and suspect.
“We will proceed to obtain a remand order on the suspect to facilitate further investigations,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He added that further updates would be announced once the post-mortem was concluded.
A press conference regarding the stabbing incident is scheduled for today at the Selangor police contingent headquarters.
