Three govt clinics record increase in influenza-like illness, situation under control, says Melaka exco man

MELAKA: Three government clinics in the state have recorded a rise in consultations for influenza-like illness (ILI) during epidemiological week 40 (EW40).

Melaka health, human resources and unity committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said Peringgit Clinic in Melaka Tengah district and Masjid Tanah Clinic in Alor Gajah registered the highest consultation rates at 17.5%, up from 13.7% and 14.1%, respectively from the previous epidemiological week 39 (EW39).

"Jasin Clinic also reported an increase, with its rate climbing to 2.6% compared with 1.2% in EW39," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 8).

Ngwe said the situation remained under control and continued to be monitored by the Melaka Health Department.

“The public need not panic, but those with symptoms such as fever, cough, cold or sore throat should seek treatment promptly, especially children and senior citizens,” he said.

Ngwe said Melaka’s overall ILI consultation rate rose to 12.5% between Sept 28 and Oct 4, compared with 10.4% in the previous week.

The increase, he added, was seen across all age groups where 34.2% among those under 18, up from 29%, and 6.8% among adults, compared with 6.2% earlier.

“An Influenza A outbreak was also detected at a school in Alor Gajah, but the situation is under control following swift action by health officers.

"Anyone infected is advised to rest at home and avoid school to curb further spread,” he said.
