Man suspected of alleged extortion remanded in Skudai

JOHOR BARU: A 38-year-old man has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into an alleged extortion case involving a motorist in Taman Universiti near Skudai.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said police received a report from a 30-year-old local woman at about 12.49pm on Friday (Sept 4).

“In her report, the victim claimed that at about 11.30am the same day, her vehicle was followed by a motorcyclist in the Taman Universiti area.

“The suspect allegedly asked the complainant to stop, claiming that his motorcycle had been hit and demanding compensation,” he said here on Sunday (Sept 6).

ACP Radin Ramlan added that another motorcyclist arrived at the scene while the argument was taking place.

“The complainant then honked her vehicle’s horn, causing both suspects to flee,” he said.

ACP Radin Ramlan also said police detected a video of the incident that had gone viral on Facebook.

“Following information received, police arrested the suspect at about 1.20am on Saturday. We also seized several items believed to be relevant to the investigation,” he added.

ACP Radin Ramlan said checks found that the suspect had a record with nine criminal and drug-related offences.

“The suspect is under remand until Tuesday to assist investigations under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion and Section 341 of the same law for wrongful restraint,” he added.

ACP Radin Ramlan said police are still tracking down the second suspect involved in the case and urged those with information to contact the Johor Baru North district police headquarters at 07-556 3122.
