SHAH ALAM: Allegations of theft and property damage are believed to be behind the abuse of an Indonesian domestic worker by her employers in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, say police.
Selangor Police Chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar stated that the victim had been working for the suspects since late last year before the alleged abuse occurred.
“One of the motives stems from the employers’ allegations that the victim had stolen their belongings and damaged their property,” Comm Shazeli told a press conference at the Selangor Police Headquarters on Friday (Oct 23).
The case came to light after the victim suffered burn injuries across her body during an incident on Oct 16.
In response, police launched an operation that led to the arrest of six individuals, including the victim’s employers, a husband and wife, at a business premises along Jalan Merbau, Pusat Perniagaan Oren, in Butterworth, Penang.
Five of the suspects, including three women aged 20 to their 30s, were subsequently remanded for four days to assist with investigations.
The remand order, which ran from Tuesday (Oct 20) through Friday (Oct 23), was issued by Magistrate Maslinda Selamat at the Telok Datok Court.
Comm Shazeli confirmed that the victim is currently in stable condition.
The case is being investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Act 670).
