Woman arrested over alleged mistreatment of toddler at Kuantan daycare centre

KUANTAN: Police have arrested a woman to assist investigations into an incident where a two-year-and-eight-month-old boy was allegedly mistreated at a child daycare centre in Bukit Setongkol here.

Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Ashari Abu Samah said the department received a report about a viral video of the incident on social media at 10.34am on Sunday (Sept 6).

He said preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred on Aug 11. The video footage shows the victim being scolded, pulled by the hair, and having his head shaken by a woman working at the centre.

"Following the report, police conducted further investigations and detained a 31-year-old woman to assist the probe. A remand application for the suspect will be made tomorrow,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

ACP Ashari said the child was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for examination, and no serious physical injuries have been reported.

He said further investigations are ongoing and the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

"The public is advised not to make any speculation that could disrupt the investigation and to refrain from spreading videos or information that could reveal the victim's identity, as this case involves a minor,” he said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Kuantan District Police Headquarters at 09-5652222 or go to the nearest police station. — Bernama
