Post-mortem finds no internal injuries in detainee's death, exact cause still pending

PETALING JAYA: A post-mortem on a 42-year-old man who died in police custody found no internal organ injuries, although several external injuries were detected.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Aida Abdul Hamid said the exact cause of death was still pending laboratory analysis

Noorizwan Zulkefly, 42, was arrested by Cheras police on Sept 19 in connection with investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 457 of the Penal Code and Section 379 of the Penal Code.

He died while in police custody on Oct 1.

“The deceased was referred to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HCTM) in Cheras on Sept 30 for treatment.

“He was given initial treatment by doctors but was pronounced dead at 1.52am on Oct 1,” Comm Aida said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 24).

She added that the case had been classified as sudden death, with the Custodial Crime and Death Investigation Unit (USJKT) under JIPS continuing its investigation from various angles.

Investigators have recorded statements from 78 witnesses so far, comprising police officers, members of the public, medical officers, forensic medical experts, representatives of the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) and two family members of the deceased.

The case has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) in accordance with Section 26 of the Independent Police Conduct Commission Act 2022 (Act 839).

Comm Aida said the police remained committed to transparency, accountability and justice in handling such incidents.

She urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed transparently and refrain from speculation that could interfere with the process.

“JIPS assures that it will not compromise on any misconduct by any party and will take action in accordance with the rules and the law,” she said.

Noorizwan’s death in police custody prompted human rights groups to call for an independent and thorough investigation.

On Oct 9, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) urged police to investigate the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code following allegations of serious injuries on the victim’s body.

Meanwhile, Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), representing the family, questioned the victim’s physical condition and alleged that his family was informed of his death about 18 hours after the incident.
