KUALA LUMPUR: A 26-year-old man who allegedly posed as a delivery rider died following a struggle with police after being suspected of involvement in a robbery and rape case at a condominium in Wangsa Maju.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the incident occurred at about 12.40pm Monday (Oct 6) when police received an emergency call reporting a house break-in at the location.
"Acting on the information, two police officers rushed to the scene and called out to the occupants, but there was no response.
"Five minutes later, a man opened the door. The officers identified themselves as police and entered the premises to conduct an inspection,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Oct 7).
Comm Fadil said the man suddenly drew a meat cleaver and attempted to attack the officers, sparking a struggle.
"One of the officers managed to dodge the attack, but the suspect punched him in the face and bit his hand.
"With the help of a security guard, the suspect was eventually subdued,” he said.
However, after being detained, the suspect complained of shortness of breath.
"An ambulance was called to the scene, and 40 minutes later, medical personnel confirmed that the man had died,” Comm Fadil said.
A post-mortem conducted found that the cause of death was still under investigation, pending laboratory reports to determine the exact cause.
"Forensic examinations did not reveal any obvious injuries on the suspect’s body,” he added.
Investigations later revealed that during the incident, four local women were inside the residence.
"The suspect had tied up the victims’ hands, confining three of them in the master bedroom.
"One of the victims was taken to another room where she was raped twice, including once in the bathroom.
All four victims sustained minor injuries to their hands, faces, and bodies,” said Comm Fadil.
He added that the suspect had also stolen RM200 cash and an ATM card belonging to one of the victims before committing the assault.
Further checks revealed that the 26-year-old suspect had a criminal record for multiple offences, all related to robbery cases.
