CYBERJAYA: The investigation into arrests linked to the ‘counter setting’ scandal is being finalised, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
He said the number of individuals detained remains unchanged.
“The investigation is being completed and there have been no new arrests so far.
I have instructed my officers to expedite the investigation within the next three weeks.
After that, should there be any further developments, whether charges are brought or not, I guarantee that I will inform the public,” he said at the 8th anniversary of the Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) at Multimedia University (MMU) on Wednesday (Sept 24).
Last week, Azam said his team was examining the financial records of family members and close associates of those detained in connection with the case.
Previously, he said enforcement officers involved had received bribes ranging from RM1,800 to RM2,500 for each foreign national successfully entering Malaysia, with payments made in cash and via mule accounts.
On average, officers involved received between RM10,000 and RM50,000 per month depending on the number of foreign nationals allowed entry.
Through an operation launched on September 9, MACC under Op Rentas detained 30 individuals, including 18 enforcement agency officers, five company owners and three civilians.
The arrests were made in Selangor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan.
