Modi to attend Asean Summit next month, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 47th Asean Summit here in October, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said Modi will be present alongside other global leaders such as US President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

"Don’t envy me, it is a major task to navigate through those times.

"We have Modi from India, the PMs of Japan, Canada, Italy, Brazil’s Lula (President Inacio Lula da Silva) and (President) Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa.

“It is not just the 11 countries (in Asean), but we are talking about countries in Asia, Europe and... (the Americas),” he said in his opening remarks at the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) at the World Trade Centre KL here on Thursday (Sept 18).

Anwar also reminded Asean delegates to uphold the regional grouping's principles, as it is set to be in the global spotlight during the summit.

“We must be clear... we must not compromise on good governance, and (must stand against) abuse of power,” he added.

The 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits are scheduled to be held from Oct 26 to 28.
