A ‘five-stones’ revival, one stitch at a time

ZAKIYATULMISKIYAH Ahmad Zaidi (pic), from Tapah is using her creativity to make the traditional game “batu seremban” (five-stones) popular among the younger generation again, Kosmo! reported.

The 34-year-old seamstress said she got the idea following a request from her child, who loved playing the game.

However, she said the gravel or river stones used to fashion a set of batu seremban were not appropriate, as they were sharp and could injure a child’s fingers.

“I take orders to sew clothes and have a lot of discarded cloth lying around. I thought, why not use the cloth as the main item to sleeve the batu seremban?”

Zakiyatulmiskiyah said fashioning patchwork batu seremban filled with green beans enables children to play without harm.

She said her innovation would also allow adults to play the traditional game again.

> Putri Dahlia, daughter of renowned local singer Datuk Nora Ariffin, drew attention when she appeared without a hijab for the first time at the 24th Anugerah Industri Muzik at the Arena of Stars on Sunday, Harian Metro reported.

The 21-year-old singer said that her choice to remove the headscarf was a deliberate decision after wearing it for over 15 years, beginning at the age of six.

“I started wearing the hijab from a young age. But now, I want to begin a new journey and find my own path,” she told the daily.

Putri Dahlia said her decision was not intended to spark controversy or to be an act of defiance linked to challenges faced by her mother.

“This has nothing to do with family matters,” she said, stressing that her decision had received the blessing of her family, provided she continued to fulfil her responsibilities as a Muslim.

The singer also spoke of plans to change her stage name to simply “Dahlia” in line with a new album she was working on.
