MELAKA: Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai said the media and community organisations must strengthen cooperation to address misinformation and global uncertainty.
Wong said this at the Media Appreciation Night organised by the Melaka Civil Defence Force Associate Officers Association (PPBAPM) and Swiss-Belhotel at Jalan Hang Tuah in Melaka on Saturday (April 18).
“The media played a key role in reporting news, shaping public views, building empathy and linking people from different backgrounds,” he said.
He said current challenges included humanitarian crises and the spread of misinformation, and that all parties needed to act more responsibly. He said goodwill meant a commitment to mutual understanding, respect and cooperation across different backgrounds.
He also said the Melaka PPBAPM had worked to promote racial harmony through inclusive community-based programmes.
“Media reports on the group’s humanitarian missions, emergency response work and community training had helped raise public awareness and strengthen social cohesion,” Wong said.
He added that the media, uniformed bodies, the corporate sector and the public shared responsibility for ensuring that public messages were constructive.
The event was attended by The Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng, lawyer Datuk Mohamed Ridza Abdullah and Mediway Group chief executive officer Dr K.M. Gannesh.
Ng also received a special award from PPBAPM for her work in promoting humanitarian missions.
