Anwar pays personal tribute to Sikh community

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid a deeply personal tribute to the Sikh community, describing them as “part of my family” who stood by him through his years of struggle, including his time in prison.

He said celebrations such as Vaisakhi do not only honour heritage but also reinforce shared values among Malaysians.

“When we celebrate Vaisakhi, we not only honour a cherished tradition but also create awareness of the values it represents,” he said at the opening of the Vaisakhi Fest in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Also present was Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

Anwar highlighted the long-standing contributions of the Sikh community in Malaysia, particularly in upholding the values of service, justice and togetherness.

“The enduring spirit of service, of togetherness, of justice, and the Sikh community in Malaysia have, of course, long played a vital role,” he said.

He also spoke of his personal ties with the Sikh community, recalling their support during difficult periods in his life.

“For me personally, the Sikh family was part of my family, part of my struggle, part of my decades in prison,” he added.

In a light-hearted moment, Anwar joked about Gobind’s role in the Cabinet, reflecting the close relationships built across communities.

“Sometimes when he speaks in Cabinet, I am not sure whether he is speaking as my counsellor or a member of the Cabinet,” he quipped.

He added that such bonds reflect the Malaysian spirit of unity, despite differences in race, religion and culture.

Anwar also expressed his respect for Sikhism and its founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

“It signifies reverence, affection and profound recognition of the teachings that contribute to the human spirit,” he said.
