Young soldier killed in Bertam accident while helping father with motorcycle tyre

KEPALA BATAS: Military personnel Mohd Haziq Adnan, 22, was on his way to help his father inflate a motorcycle tyre when he was killed in a road accident in Bertam on Saturday (Sept 6).

His mother, Azlina Ali, 49, said her son had returned from training camp in Port Dickson on Friday (Sept 5).

"On Saturday, he drove out to help his father pump the motorcycle tyre and then was supposed to go for a haircut.

"Everything seemed normal, until we received the devastating news at about 6pm," she said tearfully at the Kepala Batas Hospital mortuary on Sunday (Sept 7).

Mohd Haziq’s father, Adnan Darus, was too distraught to speak to reporters.

Mohd Haziq was the eldest of two children.

Azlina said her son had served at the Terendak Camp in Sungai Udang, Melaka, for the past two years and began training in Port Dickson in June.

"He was pursuing mechanical engineering in the camp," she added.

Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican, who expressed his condolences, described Mohd Haziq as a fallen ‘young hero’.

"The deceased was not only a dutiful son, but also the backbone of the family and was deeply loved.

"His loss at such a young age is profoundly felt by his father, mother and beloved sister," said Reezal.

Mohd Haziq’s remains were sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for post-mortem before burial at the Lahar Tiang Mosque cemetery on Sunday.

The drivers of two cars were killed while a passenger was injured during the accident when their vehicles collided in Jalan Shah Bandar, Taman Bertam Perdana on Saturday.

The other driver killed was identified as Tan Kwang Sin, 56.

The bodies of both drivers were extricated from the wreckage by firemen and later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
