Two seismic stations, exercises planned

SEGAMAT: Two modern seismic stations will be built in Segamat, while a series of disaster simulation exercises will be launched nationwide from October.

“The government is taking follow-up actions very seriously in response to the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that occurred in the Segamat district,” said National Disaster Management Agency director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah.

“The programme was implemented in Sabah last year and proved to be highly effective.

“Moments after a training session, a real incident occurred, and the communities involved showed that they were well-prepared,” he told Bernama.

He also announced that October will be designated National Preparedness Month. Previously focused on floods, it will now be expanded to include earthquake and landslide scenarios.

Segamat district officer Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi said an application for the construction of the seismic stations has been submitted to the state and federal governments since there are no such stations in the district.

There are 80 seismic stations nationwide, including six in Johor, two in Johor Baru and one each in Kluang, Batu Pahat, Mersing and Kota Tinggi.

The station in Segamat will be developed by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
