Justice for Zara rally: Student's sedition case referred to Sabah DPP, say cops

KOTA KINABALU: Investigations into a 23-year-old university student who allegedly made seditious remarks against Sabah Yang DiPertua Negeri at the 'Justice For Zara' Solidarity Rally will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for direction.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin stated that they would seek further instructions from the DPP office regarding the case by next week, following 28 public reports.

In a statement on Wednesday (Sept 3), he said the suspect was released by police after relevant procedures were completed.

"We have recorded the suspect's statement and also statements from relevant witnesses in the case," he said, adding that they will recommend that the woman be charged under the relevant laws.

The suspect was arrested at about 12.30 pm on Monday (Sept 1) at Batu 4, along Jalan Apas in Tawau after being identified through police investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Jasmin emphasized that the police will not compromise with any person or group that causes public disturbance through speeches, especially in open places.

"We advise the public not to issue statements that may affect public order or touch on the sensitivities of certain parties," he added.
