Varsity student arrested for seditious statement against Sabah TYT


KOTA KINABALU: A 23-year-old woman, who is alleged to have made a seditious remark against Sabah Yang DiPertua Negeri at Sunday's (Aug 31) “Justice For Zara” solidarity rally in Tawau has been arrested.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was arrested in Batu 4, Jalan Apas area here at 12.30pm Tuesday (Sept 2).

He stated that the suspect was identified during the course of police investigations.

He said the woman was being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said that the arrest could be done without the need for a warrant.

"Police are recording the suspect's statement, and further investigation is ongoing," he said in a statement on Tuesday..

Earlier, the Suara Mahasiswa group reported that one of their students participating in the Tawau rally had been detained by the police in Tawau.

Police investigations were in regard to reports alleging that the woman made a seditious statement against Tun Musa Aman while speaking at the gathering.
