Merdeka a call to strengthen nation’s moral foundations, says Lee Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: Merdeka is more than just a date or a festive occasion; it is a call to strengthen the nation's moral foundations, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).

The national unity advocate said the true strength of a country lies not only in its economy or physical development, but also in the moral fibre of its people.

"Beginning with our political leadership, we must cultivate good moral values, uphold integrity in all that we do, and practise compassion towards our fellow Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or background," he said in his National Day message.

He emphasised that integrity must serve as the nation’s compass, guiding Malaysians to do the right thing even when no one is watching, while compassion should be the bridge that unites people through understanding, kindness and empathy.

"In this spirit of Merdeka, let us commit ourselves to building a Malaysia that is not only prosperous but just and principled, not only modern but also moral, not only strong but also selfless," he said.

Lee expressed hope that future generations would inherit a Malaysia that is united, dignified and ever compassionate.

"Let the values we live by be the true measure of our independence," he added, extending his greetings to Malaysians in conjunction with the 68th National Day.
