A community draped in the spirit of ‘Merdeka’

IPOH: In the spirit of Merdeka, residents at Taman Harmoni Buntong have raised dozens of Jalur Gemilang and Perak flags around the perimeter walls.

Taman Harmoni Buntong Residents Association chairman Muhammad Faiz Abdullah said they want to show their patriotism and hopefully inspire others to do the same.

“As Malaysians, I feel it is our responsibility to be loyal to the country. Raising our flags is one way to remember and celebrate our independence.

“I’ve also ordered the flags of other states and will put them up soon,” he said.

Muhammad Faiz, 57, said apart from patriotism, they also want to promote unity.

“There has been quite a number of unwarranted incidents recently and I hope we can show everyone that we can be united.

“About 80 people from various races came together to help put up the flags on Aug 15,” he added.

The e-hailing driver, who has been living at the Taman Harmoni Buntong flats since 2007, said those present also sang patriotic songs.

When asked what Merdeka means to him, he said it would be for the country to be free from discord and corruption.

“We have our independence and freedom but we are still fighting corruption and incidents of disunity.

“My sincere hope is that we put words into action to show we are Malaysians,” he said, adding that their flag-flying initiative was supported by the Ipoh City Council, local councillors and Buntong assemblyman M. Thulsi.
