True independence requires unity, responsibility, says Selangor Ruler

SHAH ALAM: The independence achieved by the nation is not merely symbolic, but a profound responsibility entrusted to every Malaysian, to be safeguarded with the utmost commitment, unity and a strong sense of national identity, says Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

In conjunction with the 68th National Day celebrations, Sultan Sharafuddin highlighted the importance of understanding the true essence of independence, a cause passionately championed by previous generations who sacrificed greatly to liberate the country from colonial rule.

His Royal Highness emphasised the importance of maintaining unity and harmony among Malaysia's diverse races, religions and cultures, and urged everyone to cultivate a strong sense of national identity and respect for the democratically elected government, as this is crucial for the nation's stability and prosperity.

"While freedom of speech is a right guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, it must be exercised judiciously, within the boundaries established by the law.

"All expressions of opinion and criticism must be made with due consideration, for the common good, and should not serve as a vehicle for spreading falsehoods and accusations that may fracture society or tarnish the dignity of others," Sultan Sharafuddin said in a statement Saturday (Aug 30).

The Ruler further called on the people to continually nurture the spirit of brotherhood and mutual respect, regardless of differences, to value the peace and freedom that the nation enjoys, and to embrace the principles of loyalty, respect and responsibility in their daily lives.

Sultan Sharafuddin expressed the hope that the spirit of independence would serve as a catalyst for the people to strengthen their personal development, as well as that of their families and the nation, and also encouraged all to return to the core values of the Rukun Negara and embody them in their actions.

His Royal Highness also prayed for the continued peace, prosperity, and divine blessings upon Selangor and Malaysia, and expressed his desire that the spirit of independence would unite the people in working together to build a brighter, more prosperous future for the country. - Bernama
