True independence means eradicating corruption and social ills, says Anwar

SERDANG: Celebrating independence should also mean resolving to eliminate corruption and eradicating the ills harming the nation and its people, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said there will be no compromise in tackling these issues.

“Are we perfect? No. Have we stopped smuggling? It is still around.

The spirit of independence means we must work to eradicate leakages such as corruption, smuggling, and other illegal practices,” he said in his National Day address at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) on Saturday (August 30).

He said the Madani administration has broken cartels and will continue to confront them.

“I have told enforcement bodies to continue fighting cartels and those using illegal means to destroy the country. There is no compromise.

The chicken cartel, which had been around for years—we broke it. This was achieved not only through political will but also through the sacrifices of our enforcement bodies,” he said.

The Prime Minister said every Cabinet meeting addresses matters affecting the rakyat, including healthcare and the price of goods, chicken or eggs.

“It is always discussed in depth. Even a price increase of five sen troubles us, although we know prices are rising in other countries,” he said.
