KUCHING: Sarawakians are taking inspiration from the National Month celebrations to create Merdeka-themed costumes and accessories, mainly for children.
Housewife Aziefitri Morni is making headbands in the Jalur Gemilang’s colours for kindergarten pupils in Kampung Lintang Baru, Serian, near here.
The headbands are decorated with hibiscus flowers, the word “Merdeka” and the number 68 to represent the upcoming 68th National Day on Aug 31.
“I saw similar headbands on social media, which inspired me to make them in conjunction with National Day.
“It is for kindergarten pupils to wear during their school National Day celebration,” she said.
Aziefitri said she receives requests from parents to make the headbands for their children, adding that it takes her about half an hour to complete one.
Kuching designer Razie Shahriman Mohd Ali says he enjoys making Merdeka-themed costumes whenever National Month comes around.
For him, it is an opportunity to create garments that not only showcase a patriotic spirit but also Sarawak’s cultural heritage.
His costumes are made in the Jalur Gemilang’s colours and often feature design motifs from the traditional attire of Sarawak’s ethnic groups.
“My most special Merdeka costume was a red, blue, yellow and white piece, combined with buriek, pua kumbu and songket,” Razie said.
Buriek refers to cowrie shells beaded into decorative patterns in traditional Iban attire, while pua kumbu is a traditional Iban textile.
“Each Merdeka costume tells a story. I want people to not only see the garment but also understand the culture and values that inspired it,” he said.
He said parents often request costumes for their children’s National Day celebrations at school.
