More bite against commercial property projects

THE Housing and Local Government Ministry is considering amending the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act 1966, known as Act 118, to extend enforcement powers to cover problematic commercial property projects, says Nga Kor Ming (pic).

The Housing and Local Government Minister told Parliament the proposed amendments would allow stricter measures, including blacklisting directors of both parent and subsidiary property firms, as part of broader efforts to prevent private housing projects from becoming stalled or abandoned.

“The amendments will strengthen preventive and long-term measures by enabling more comprehensive enforcement.

“Not only the parent company, but also the ultimate beneficial owners behind these firms will face blacklisting,” Nga said during a question-and-answer session yesterday.

He said the ministry will continue engagement with enforcement agencies, legislators, industry players and consumer representatives to ensure the revisions are “relevant, comprehensive and high impact” in line with the government’s Madani vision.

“If all goes smoothly, the amendments will be tabled next year,” Nga added.
