No rush to raise retirement age to 65, says Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no rush to make any decision to extend the retirement age to 65 for civil servants, says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) said the Public Services Department (JPA) is carrying out a comprehensive study on the matter.

The study comprises aspects of health, productivity, promotion opportunities for younger workers and also fiscal implications for both the short and long term.

"JPA will not be doing this in a hurry. The government will be taking a comprehensive approach on this, to gauge fiscal implications.

"This ensures any decision made is holistic and balanced while taking into account the country's best interest and well-being of civil servants," she said when winding up debates for her portfolio in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 18).

She said discussions are also being held with the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs).

Several aspects will be reviewed, including any extension of the retirement age in phases, allowing civil servants to have a choice on their retirement age and for those that opt to retire at 65 having to pass a health and psychometric assessment.
