Mother hands over Zara Qairina's phone to police

KOTA KINABALU: The mother of deceased Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir has handed over the deceased's phone containing videos and audio to the police.

Noraidah Lamat arrived at the Karamunsing police station at around 4pm on Thursday (Aug 7) accompanied by several members of a non-governmental organisation.

The audio files are believed to contain conversations where the victim spoke of her fear of being bullied as well as the names of students or suspects possibly linked to her death.

Her lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri were also present but were not involved in the handing over process.

Hamid said Noraidah still has a backup of all audio files from the handphone.

He said Noraidah was asked to hand over the handphone on Wednesday (Aug 6) night, but since she just had a four-hour meeting with Sipitang police, they allowed her to go home and rest and only handed the phone over on Thursday (Aug 7).

Hamid also said the request for exhumation of Zara Qairina's body for an autopsy is still pending.

Asked if Noraidah had refused to authorise a post-mortem examination on her daughter before, he said there was no request for one in the first place.

Zara Qairina was pronounced dead a day after she was believed to have fallen from the third floor of her school hostel in SMA Tun Datu Mustafa in Papar on July 16.

Various claims surround her death, including allegations that she was bullied.
